Useless machines

For Gdynia Design Days 2019, I created the Useless Boxes project, which was part of the "Materia Kodu" exhibition. This installation consists of two boxes designed to explore and challenge our perceptions of modern technology. One box is physical, and the other is digital, creating a cognitive dissonance for viewers.

Concept and Objective
The inspiration came from MIT professor Marvin Minsky's Useless Machine, which performs an action without any meaningful purpose. My interpretation reflects on the shift from rich, sensory interactions with technology to today's flat, screen-based interactions.
Installation Design
Physical Box: It embodies the tactile, sensory-rich interactions of past devices.
Digital Box: It represents modern, touch-sensitive but less tactile interactions.
Interaction Dynamics: By contrasting these two boxes, I aimed to highlight the changes in how technology engages users, shifting from multi-sensory experiences to more superficial ones.
Execution and Technology
The project employs minimalist design principles, focusing on the stark contrast between the two boxes. The physical box features tangible, mechanical components, while the digital box uses touch-sensitive surfaces to perform its 'useless' function.
Outcomes and Observations
Viewer Engagement: Many visitors felt a strong cognitive dissonance, prompting them to question the utility and purpose of modern technological interactions.
Philosophical Reflection: The installation encouraged deeper contemplation about the evolving nature of technology and its impact on user experience.
Technological Critique: By showcasing devices that perform seemingly pointless tasks, the project critiques the design of contemporary gadgets, which often prioritize form over function.
Conclusion
The Useless Boxes project is a thought-provoking commentary on the evolution of human-technology interactions. Through these seemingly pointless devices, I aimed to raise important questions about the utility, design, and emotional engagement of modern technology.
