Miyoo Mini – Emoji Theme

The Miyoo Mini is quite the thing – a small, Gameboy-like console that can emulate almost anything from the golden age of gaming. Original Pokémon, Zelda, Crash Bandicoot, Metroid – you name it. It's a super interesting piece of hardware with an old-school computer vibe. Uploading ROMs and installing the Onion system software took me down memory lane to the 90s, reminding me of how we used to interact with early computers.
Back then, I wasn’t much of a gamer because I didn’t focus on consoles or gaming; I was more of a PC person. Anything you could do with Windows 98 or Linux was my thing. Gaming was quite dull and challenging due to Moore’s Law – the doubling of computer capabilities meant I simply couldn’t afford to have the latest tech every year. I was only 7–10 years old at the time.
Anyway, going back to the past with the Onion system on the Miyoo Mini was a blast. The system has a specific setup, and if you want, you can even change the visual theme. When I saw that, I immediately started imagining what I could do with it. Just for fun, I began swapping visual files to explore the possibilities.
This experiment turned into a three-day project, resulting in an emoji theme for the Miyoo Mini console. The theme works and is available on my GitHub. It was mainly a personal project, something I did for fun to see my own visual creations integrated into a larger open system that I could modify. It feels so empowering to be able to change things like this when you understand how they work.
